Bindel/Stonewall Update
I finally got my very own copy of their form letter. I guess they've been working hard to clear the backlog:

Date: Tue, 14 Oct 2008 10:07:14 +0100
From: "Info" <info@stonewall.org.uk>

Dear Sarah,

Thank you for your email.

Julie Bindel was shortlisted for a Stonewall award in recognition of her journalism during the last 12 months which often brings a lesbian perspective into the mainstream press.

The awards nominating panel are not endorsing everything she has ever written. A nomination in any category does not mean that the awards panel agree with all of someone's opinions. Stonewall recognises that some people may disagree with shortlisted nominees.

Regards,

Stonewall

Is it wrong to admit that talk of a "lesbian perspective" has me mentally picturing belly buttons?

In other developments, It seems the Bindel camp is trying to organise a counter-demonstration. For those who have Facebook, you can see details here. For those who don't, here's the text:

Rally with other radicals to support radical lesbian feminism in our national press - JB is our only out and open journo writing regularly in our national broadsheet 'The Guardian'. Rally to support her nomination as 'Journalist of the Year'. Join us outside the V&A on Thursday 6th November at 6.30pm to shout 3 cheers for Julie Bindel and her work. More power to her. Say no to silencing - make your voice heard at this important rally. Bring banners, noise makers, loud voices, choirs, radical cheerleaders, friends.

You know, that kinda reads more like copy from The Sun than The Guardian to me.

And Radical Cheerleaders? I wonder what she's hoping for?

"Two four six eight, support Julie! Keep the hate! Seven eight nine ten, see those trannies? They're ugly men! We hope you get our radfem gist; FTMs, they don't exist! Spread the hate to gay pride too! Trannies use the disabled loo. Gooooooooo Haters!"

anybody else noticed that her fan club has only 33 members, and one of those is christine burns?

this tickles me greatly.

I would hope that it will now start to become abundantly clear to Bindel that she does not represent the majority of feminists or lesbians on this point.

Sadly, she seems fairly opaque to such things.

I suspect she already knows, but doesn't care. It became abundantly clear from talking to her that there are (at least) two Julie Bindels - there's the one you get in a private discussion, where she's actually calm and reasonable, and even charming, and there's the public persona. I suspect the latter is mostly a commercial product - a kind of (barely) thinking person's version of the "Daily Mail reader in the pub". She knows what she's doing is wrong, and hurts people, but seems not to care.

The odd thing is that I don't think she even is appealing to populism most of the time, at least not in the usual sense of populism. Most of what she writes in the Guardian is this painfully earnest anti-porn, anti-everything feminist diatribe. And all criticism is answered with "OMG Rape!" From personal experience, rape is not the only bad thing that can happen to a person, and I don't even think it's the worst.

It's almost as if Bindel's playing on all the absolute worst stereotypes of a feminist in order to make the Daily Mail crowd say "See, we TOLD you all them feminists were crazy bitches who wanted to make everyone miserable!"

And then she'll go and write some absolute fluff. I really don't get it.

We're talking about her. Other people are talking about her. She's "controversial". Radio 4 sought her out. If you've got thick skin, or are just completely amoral, I guess there's money in it. It's not a career path I'd pick though.

The fluff is ... fluffy. I guess they needed to fill column inches and she needed the money.

If you were to be mistaken about her hatred being only for commercial purposes (about which I suggest you are mistaken, or rather misled), there's a psychiatric diagnosis exactly fits. ISTR its psychopath.

Wikipedia is far from infallible, but I get the feeling that radical cheerleaders are more likely to be on the pro-trans side. Apart from anything else, they appear to be having fun, which places them squarely outside the radfem camp.

Because the radfems and the fundaloonies are both kept awake at night by the haunting fear that somewhere, somehow, a woman might be enjoying herself.

Too true!

And thanks for the link to radical cheerleading. That was really informative. I think an edit to my post might be in order.

I just fail to understand why we as trans continue to throw our support behind the GLB community when they have shown time and again that they are willing to sell us down the river whenever it's expedient to them. Look at the record. C250 in Canada, ENDA in the US, nominating Bailey for the Lambda award, this particular event, the hijacking of the whole Stonewall thing, (a trans event). We have proven that we can effectively fight back, so why support them at all?

Mostly, I think, because a lot of us identify as GLB, and so see it as our community too.

But the amount of transphobia it harbours can be depressing as hell at times.

Including me and my partner. But it's been my experience that most mainstream GLBs are incredibly ignorant about trans. I think they keep expecting CD/TV/DQ. Nevertheless, if we're going to keep doing this sort of stuff to us, essentially forcing us to pick sides, I know where I stand. We cannot depend on them for support, and that's been made plain.

Well, perhaps it really IS time to re ignite the give us back our 'T' campaign that got going during the Bailey farrago?

And we wouldn't, I suspect, be in the business of excluding LGB trans people or straight trans people or trans people of colour, or trans people with different abilities or variant people or non trans people, or..............anyone really :o)

Nope! Just the bigots!

In response to the Stonewall e-mail, my comparison of giving Mussolini an award for getting Italy's trains running on time still stands.

As for "say no to silencing", where is this oppression of which the bileful one speaks? I don't see any. I see people rightly challenging her views and perceptions about trans issues.

Love the cheerleader chant! :-)

Have you read the abominations of Nuggan in Terry Pratchett's 'Monstrous regiment'?

'Rightly challenging'- come on already, this is the sainted Bindell we're challenging here............

Haven't read that TP work, will look it up. Think the other half has most of TP's stuff.

There aren't many saints in this world and Bindel sure isn't on my list of saints. Tainted she may be but canonised? My arse deserves canonisation before she does.

Perhaps canonised via one of HMS Belfast's 15 inch guns would be the best approach :o)

I suspect that any trans person or supporter of women's rights would find 'Monstrous regiment' more than a little amusing!

Well, in real life I'm a military historian (wonder what Bindel would make of a female military historian, Quaker and pacifist?) so I tend to think that way :o)

And Cheerleaders? I mean, she's basically accousing us of reinforcing gender norms; wtf?

I had a long correspondence with a senior member of Press for Change last night over l'affaire Bindel and I'm very disturbed by the outcome. I need ideas and would be happy for anyone who wishes to go to my most recent post and give me the benefit of their views. I begin to see a worrying split forming here (generational)

Talk later! Work!
