The "Bindoll"
I thought I was being a bit naughty with my santorum/bindel thing, but it seems I have been well and truly outdone by the gay mafia watch blog with their parody of a recent article about Barbie dolls in the Guardian:

Introducing Juliet Bindoll.

Part of me is made very uncomfortable by the idea of mocking someone by making a very fat and ugly version of a barbie doll out of them.

I take your point. My own feeling is that, at least in terms of the article text, it was probably nastier to Christine Burns than it was to Julie Bindel.

Controversial it seems. Personally, I can laugh at almost anything, and perhaps more importantly I can laugh at myself. I found it funny, and that's the only comment I can make on it; opinion is subjective, and others may read into it hurt that I didn't.

Comparing it to JB's 'grease' comments with relation to satire, though, is probably not accurate. JB (seemed to have) set out to be negative about trans people, and inserted satirical humour for effect; this article set out to be satirical rather than negative (as Have I Got News For You does), and that's a world of difference.
As with HIGNFY, some people who get joked about suddenly think it's Not Funny; I suppose that's human nature.

Certainly, I'm glad you linked to it; even to those who didn't enjoy it, this gave people a chance to discuss its merits (or lack of), the issues behind it, and taste and acceptability in general. Surely a good thing?

Maz.

Christine Burns herself has posted a comment on the gay mafia watch blog. I think she's taken it quite well.

Sarah you are SUCH a feminist!

Dearest Sarah

Who could POSSIBLY say you are not a feminist? What evidence would they have of this? None, of course.

Warmest regards, Julie Bindel

I'd also remind you that the problem with anonymous comments is that, once the person posting them recovers from their temper tantrum, they don't get to delete them.

Still, carry on if you feel it's doing you some good.

I think someone by the name of Julie Bindel has said the transwomen can't be feminists.

I Unscreened This One Because I Think a Reply is Warranted

Let's clear a few things up:
  1. I did not "liken you to smegma". Firstly, there's already a word for smegma, and there would be no need to coin a neologism. Secondly, I appreciate that you may have difficulty with reading comprehension, but the analogy I drew was not between you and the substance I named "bindel" (note lower-case-L because it's not a proper noun), but between you and Rick Santorum. He's a bigot, like you. Doing that no-more makes me "anti-women" than it makes Dan Savage "anti-men".

  2. I have never taken the piss out of your appearance. The article linked to by this post does, and I think that's a problematic and uncalled for aspect of it, and perhaps lessens the impact of the valid points the article hints at about you being full of it and Christine Burns selling out her own community by sucking up to you. Perhaps you might want to consider the diversity of the large numbers of people who find ourselves offended by your ill-informed bigotry, and remember that we are not some kind of hive-mind. I would also suggest you're not exactly coming to this with clean hands after the "Cast of Grease" crap and your recent, "what are they (transsexual people) going to do? Hit me with their wigs?" appearance-based jibes. Physician, heal thyself.

  3. I have never said that you are not "a real lesbian". What I have done is reported on the existence of rumours to that effect. Where I actually stand on their veracity is my own private business. However, I will offer what I hope is a helpful suggestion. Whilst the existence of what might be called a "lesbian culture" is undeniable, if lesbianism itself is anything at all, it is about a lady wanting to make the beast with two backs with another lady. If you object to rumours to the effect that you are a political lesbian (which I hasten to add I have not started) floating around, might I suggest you refrain from saying stupid shit about homosexuality being a choice, "I didn't want to be heterosexual", and that "having sex with women might be one aspect of a lesbian relationship" (all of which you said in the infamous "cucumber sandwiches" podcast), because that sort of stuff doesn't exactly help your case in this regard.

  4. On being "such a feminist", I would counsel about people in glass houses and stones. Early feminists gave up their liberty fighting for issues such as equal employment rights. In saying that such things bore you and leave you cold, as you did recently in Manchester, I believe that your "I'm alright Jill, screw you. Why yes Mr Summerskill, I will have another canapé" brand of feminism is an insult to their memory and legacy, and you should be ashamed of yourself.
Finally, I will point out that this is my personal diary, which I make public because I want to. I'm affording you exactly the same right to reply to anything I say here that the editor of the Grauniad affords those of us who are the targets of the hate-crimes which stem from the attitudes you promote in your articles - that is, an entirely theoretical one.

If you don't like what I write here, a solution presents itself - piss off and don't read it.

Judjing by the fact that when she doesn't have an editor editing for her, she struggles to use capital letters and punctuation, I suspect comprehending the exact nature of the protologism might be beyond her.

And after such a well spoken piece, I feel it needs a punchier end. Perhaps "Fuck off" instead of "Piss off"?
